When Gracie asked me if I would take her "Senior Portraits," flashbacks of horrible posing, overdone makeup and awkward formal attire quickly appeared. I shook my head and said, "I would...... only if......"
And it was that ONLY IF, that became the theme of our road trip and senior portrait adventure.
ONLY IF, I get to photograph you in the. mountains, by a waterfall, with your hair blowing, wearing awesome jeans and looking slightly serious and semi mysterious all at the same time. Of course this one statement was just a joke, but it now became the vision of what Gracie and I really wanted. I mean, what are senior portraits really for? In my mind, the more I thought about this, I came to the conclusion that these portraits should be about who Gracie is right now as her 17 yr old self.... All the fun, all the passion, all character of who Gracie really is as my friend, as a sister, as a daughter and as herself.
We jumped into my red Kia, grabbed her brother Grant (our personal tour guide and gear carrier) and headed straight to the NC mountains; destination Linville Gorge. Our first stop was for food at MoonDog Pizza then over to the Lower Basin Trail of Linville Falls. After one major awkward encounter with some underaged hikers, we quickly hiked down to the falls.
Gracie was a champ! She absolutely dislikes hiking but pulled it together for one of my favorite shoots today. She braved 25 mph wind on a cliff side and even danced in front of 15 other tourists scoping out the falls. But all of it came together to capture Gracie as well... Gracie.
